The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament has alleged that some key members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) orchestrated acts of violence by inciting thugs to destabilize public safety.

According to the Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, intelligence reports suggest that Totobi Quakyi and Colonel (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey are at the forefront of these activities, which are said to be aimed at targeting innocent Ghanaians.

The accusations follow President-elect John Mahama’s appointment of Quakyi and Gbevlo-Lartey to an interim team to oversee national security matters pending the appointment of permanent officials.

The Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei speaking during a press briefing in Accra expressed concerns about the potential escalation of these alleged violent acts.

“We have received reliable intelligence indicating that acts of violence and the use of thugs are being orchestrated by certain elements of the NDC leadership. Mr. Totobi Quakyi and Colonel (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey are the key leaders behind these NDC thugs, inspiring them to commit violence against innocent Ghanaians. Even more troubling is the information suggesting that these violent acts will intensify immediately after the swearing-in of the president-elect, John Dramani Mahama,” she alleged.

“This raises serious national security concerns about the safety of public officials and the citizenry as a whole. We, therefore, call on all Ghanaians to be vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police and other relevant security agencies,” the lawmaker added.

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, called on President-elect John Mahama to demonstrate leadership by putting an end to the post-election violence, emphasising the need to prevent any potential negative consequences.

“They claim they don’t know anything about these individuals, but they were chanting ‘3y3 Zu, 3y3 Za’ and responding to them.

“Today, they are saying that all those hooligans are people coming from the moon. They don’t know them. You see, even before they take over, we’ve heard of the plans, the actions, and everything they’re doing.

“We are waiting, and we hope that the president will show leadership. We hope the president will show leadership. If they do not show leadership, we will advise ourselves and, as the law permits, we will resort to any means, legal and permissible within the boundaries of our laws, to ensure that we are not taken for granted,” he stated.
