Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has made a heartfelt appeal to the government of Ghana to swiftly come to the aid of traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Adum Market in Kumasi.
During a visit to the devastated market area on Monday, April 14, the MP led a delegation from the Minority Caucus in Parliament to commiserate with victims and assess the extent of damage.
In a passionate address, Afenyo-Markin called on the government to act with urgency and use resources from Ghana’s contingency fund to alleviate the traders’ plight and fast-track reconstruction efforts.
“I take this opportunity to make a humble plea to the government of Ghana, that looking at the situation we find here, obviously the traders are suffering. We know the commitment the government made in some other areas,” he said.
The fire, which tore through large portions of the busy commercial hub, has left many traders without shops or goods, compounding their financial distress. In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, the Minority Caucus donated GHC 200,000 to help support those affected.
“We urge the government to take funds from the contingency funds and immediately and without delay come to the rescue of the suffering traders of Adum. I believe that within a year, if the government is committed to constructing the market, the government will be able to do it,” Afenyo-Markin added.
The caucus’ visit, which came just days after the disaster, is part of a growing chorus of voices demanding decisive government intervention to restore livelihoods and ensure safety for the thousands who depend on the Adum Market for survival.
