The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, a suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng made the announcement at a press briefing on February 12, 2025, revealing that Ofori-Atta is now considered a wanted fugitive.
The investigations include cases related to the controversial National Cathedral project, Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), and two other undisclosed matters. This marks a significant development in Ghana’s fight against corruption, as Ofori-Atta, who served under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, now faces heightened scrutiny.
Following the OSP’s declaration, social media erupted with reactions, with many users drawing connections between Ofori-Atta and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
One user criticized Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign, claiming, “The devil will use the right words to campaign for souls, just like Akufo-Addo did with his campaign in 2016, saying all the right words just to make Mahama feel inadequate.”
Another stated, “NPP OSP appointed by Akufo-Addo tag Akufo-Addo’s cousin as fugitive wanted in Ghana and a sitting NPP MP saying Ken Ofori-Atta should bear his own cross.”
Several comments lamented the damage done to Ofori-Atta’s reputation, with one remarking, “Ken Ofori-Atta paa, I’m sure he regrets working for Akufo-Addo. See how his hard-earned reputation has been messed up!”
“People don’t understand how Akufo-Addo made Ken Ofori-Atta. He was beyond reproach. Nobody could touch him. He did as he pleased. He was a demigod in the Akufo-Addo government.”
Some Ghanaians expressed sentiments about the case, with one user suggesting that both Ofori-Atta and Akufo-Addo should be held accountable: “As far as I can tell, Ken Ofori-Atta is hiding with relation, ex-President Akufo-Addo. If so, we would simply effect the arrest of the two! Akufo-Addo is a rogue.”
“This same Ken Ofori-Atta evaporated my old mother’s investment through the domestic debt exchange program he introduced.”
