Ghanaian environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has disclosed that he was forced to flee Ghana ahead of the 2024 elections due to threats he received over his investigative reports on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
According to Asare Donkor, who works with the Multimedia Group, his continuous exposés on galamsey activities had put his life at risk.
He revealed his ordeal on the February 1, 2025, edition of JoyNews’ Newsfile program, sharing the difficulties he faced leading to his decision to flee Ghana.
He recounted the challenging period leading up to his temporary exile, stating, “It’s been difficult for me for some time, and at some point before the elections, after assessing my security, I had to leave the country for a while.”
Erastus Donkor revealed that the threats he received went beyond verbal warnings, with some individuals delivering threats in person and sending menacing private messages.
Furthermore, upon his return to Ghana, he claimed that the intimidation continued, with disturbing threats from unknown individuals.
“After coming back, I’ve received all manner of threats from people in person and in my inboxes,” he said.
