In a bold and direct demonstration of his commitment to a clean campaign in his quest to become the 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has once again directed all spokespersons and assigns of his team to show maximum decorum to all other flag-bearer hopefuls and completely avoid insults and rude comments.
Dr. Bawumia said it is completely needless to engage in a vitriolic campaign of insults and attacks on personalities and that that energy should be used in marketing the positive campaign message and the proven aptitude of his candidature.
Speaking on Tuesday during his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia noted: “we have a solid message we need to speak of so let us focus on that message and avoid all forms of insults. Even if we get insulted, don’t reply with insults, ignore the provocation and focus on our good message of development ad progress”
He continued: “being rude is a sign of weakness. It should you have no positive message to sell. It shows you have no superior argument to make. This is an internal poll to elect our flag-bearer so we need a clean campaign, which is devoid of insults and insinuations.
“We should not provide arsenals to our opponents, the NDC, to be used against us during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary election”, Dr. Bawumia cautioned.
The Vice President was of the view that the NPP would need a united front and oneness in order to make history by winning a hat trick of elections on December 2024.
In this regard, Dr. Bawumia said if the NPP mistakenly indulge in the campaign of insults, it would create cracks, which could not be healed on time.
According to him, if the NPP insult each other and fight publicly, the NDC would take advantage of that to campaign against the NPP during the 2024 polls.
“We should not provide arsenals to our opponents, the NDC, to be used against us during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary election”, he warned.
Dr. Bawumia, who is currently on a campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, stated that the NPP should jealously protect the unity and peace in the party.
“We need unity and only unity to win the next polls”, Dr. Bawumia said, reiterating that the presidential aspirants should campaign, devoid of insults.
Dr. Bawumia has become the ‘bull’s eye’ and the most attacked among the ten persons lacing boots to hold the party’s flag.
Indeed, quite recently, one of the aspirants, a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko stated publicly that eight of the aspirants which he is part, are united in opposition to Dr Bawumia’s bid and would not support him should there be a runoff involving him and another.
Not long after that ‘eight versus one’ public revelation, the insults and attacks on Dr. Bawumia gathered momentum.
Several polls have put Dr Bawumia ahead of the other nine aspirants in the flag-bearer race.
Alan Kyeremanten and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong are among the top contenders.
Dr Bawumia, however, enjoys overwhelming support from the rank and file of the party especially from the Ashanti Region considered the party’s World Bank.
The Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye-led vetting committee last week cleared all 10 presidential aspirants who filed their nomination forms for the special Electoral College election.
The ten aspirants are Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Joe Ghartey and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Others include Boakye Agarko. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Addai-Nimoh Francis, Joe Ghartey and Dr. Konadu Apreku.
To comply with the party’s constitution, which mandates narrowing down the contestants to five, a special congress is likely to be convened in August.
This congress will serve the purpose of reducing the number of contenders and preparing for the subsequent Presidential primaries in November.
