The Truth Forum brings to you a summary of news about the Akufo Addo led government this week

INFLATION RATE HITS 23.6%, HIGHEST IN 18 YEARS

The economic woes of the Ghanaian under the tenure of Akufo Addo are becoming perpetual. There seems no end in sight. In April, the inflation rate of the country reached an unprecedented 23.6%. The new record depicts its highest since January, 2004. This was revealed by the Ghana Statistical Service. In April, prices of food have reached 26.6% from 22.4% in March while non-food inflation accelerated to 21.3% in April from 17% in March.

NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SINKING DEEP UNDER NANA ADDO

Whilst in opposition, the President claimed the National Health Insurance was dead and that he was going revive it should he win power. However, the current state of the scheme tells a different story. A study of the National Health Insurance Fund Allocation Formula for 2022 shows that of the GHC2.056 billion collected from Ghanaians, only GHC127.47 million of the total collected was released by government to address obligations. It’s not surprising that service providers are questioning the commitment of government to the scheme. This trend has been a norm since 2018. The complete disregard for the laws by the finance minister is unprecedented. A government for the people must be seen as one with the people.

MY MIND IS STILL ON AGYAPA DEAL-KEN OFORI-ATTA

Ken Ofori Atta has said his mind is firmly on Agyapa deal. This is the deal that gave the President the infamous name “mother serpent of corruption” yet his government is determined to go for the kill and bring in the deal. The Ghanaian citizenry and civil society organizations have actually pointed out the flaws in the deal which points to corruption. For the fear of losing the 2020 election, the government dropped the deal; however, after winning the election he’s bringing it back to hurt the Ghanaian.

ECG AND GHANA WATER COMPANY DEMAND INCREMENT IN UTILITY TARIFFS

In a week where transport fares saw an increment, the Ghanaian was met with the news of a proposed Utility Tariffs asking for an increment. The Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company are demanding over 130% increment in utility tariffs. After politicking with free water and free electricity in 2020, the Ghanaian is made to pay for the political sins of Akufo Addo. The prices of transport fares are high, inflation is skyrocketing, and the exchange rate is running after the major currencies. Ghana is now hell on earth yet government does no wrong, sees no wrong.
